Coating Scientist / Engineer
Earthodic
Company
Earthodic Pty Ltd
Location
Geebung, Queensland Australia (on-site 5 days / week, with some flexibility)
Role reports to:
Chief Technology Officer.
Who we are
At Earthodic, we're helping to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. Our proprietary, bio-based coatings deliver functional barrier properties without compromising repulpability or recyclability…think water-resistant and circular. We’re a close-knit, ambitious team spread across the US and Australia, and we’re here to make a dent in the (waste-filled) universe. This role is based in Geebung, Queensland, Australia and is essential to our mission of scaling from lab to launch.
What you will own.
The Coating Scientist / Engineer will be a go-to-person for everything between R&D and real-world delivery. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role that blends lab work, manufacturing partnerships, quality assurance, and direct customer collaboration.
We are currently a small team, but with big growth ambitions! We can also offer the successful candidate exposure and experience to other non-technical elements of a high growth science-based technology company. This is an entry to mid level position.
You will:
Conduct routine paper coating, analytical testing and evaluation of coatings and coated paper (i.e. liquid water barrier, heat seal, oil and grease barrier etc).
Apply coatings in the lab directly onto customer substrates, develop prototypes and customer ready samples that shine. Because we’re not afraid to get our hands dirty here.
Work as part of the technical team to ensure that products meet customer needs and are feasible to manufacture at scale.
Help to generate certified coated materials that meet industry benchmarks.
Analyse and interpret data to make data-driven decisions in the formulation and scaling process.
Contribute to reducing to practice, ideas for patent applications for unique formulations and products.
Assist with scale-up activities in Australia and also overseas, as and where appropriate.
Assist with co-ordination of Earthodic sample packs for customers, partners, and certifications (including robust and timely shipping procedures).
Join select sales calls or site visits to bring your technical insight directly to the table.
Proactively contribute to a culture of lab safety, including audits, protocols, and training.
Travel occasionally to visit partners and support trials as needed.
Embrace flexible work hours to support real-time collaboration across time zones, particularly with our US-based team. (We don’t expect extended hours every day, but a bit of time-zone tango comes with the global territory.)
This is a role with a big scope and high visibility. You'll help shape how our products go from concept to customers: fast, smart, and at scale.
What we are looking for:
A degree in Engineering, Science, Packaging or another relevant STEM field.Note: whilst we welcome Masters and PhD graduates, these higher degrees are not prerequisites.
Experience with chemical formulating, laboratory analytical testing, scaling processes.
Comfort in a lab in and around manufacturing equipment.
Adept at understanding technical specifications and maintaining safety standards.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Good attention to detail, with a process-driven mindset.
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical and commercial information effectively with colleagues, suppliers and customers.
Bonus points for:
Proven experience in the formulation of functional coatings for pulp, paper, or fibre applications.
Experience with dispersing pigments and powers and scaling these processes.
Demonstrated ability to add enhancements and innovations to coating formulations.
Expertise in bio-based materials and sustainable chemistry.
